TextExpander touch 3.2.3—Recover Lost Snippets

TextExpander touch 3.2.3 was released April 7 with an unforeseen bug that appears to erase all your snippets. The snippets are not lost forever, but an app update will be needed to bring them back, unless you use Dropbox Sync and restore them that way. We are working to have v3.2.4 available as soon as possible. We are sorry for the distress this is causing, losing snippets is always a frustrating event.

If you haven’t noticed any problems, it’s likely you have not opened the TextExpander touch app since the v3.2.3 update. It’s best not to open it until after the v3.2.4 update.

First, Do Not delete and reinstall the app as this may lose your snippets irrevocably.

You can still use snippets in TextExpander-enhanced apps. However you should not refresh your snippets in any TextExpander-enhanced apps, as this will update the snippets in that app to the default set of snippets.

If your snippets have disappeared, and you use Dropbox

If you have setup Dropbox to sync your snippets, then your snippets are still stored in Dropbox, and can be retrieved immediately:

  1. In the TextExpander Settings switch Dropbox sync OFF.
  2. Now switch Dropbox sync back ON.
  3. Choose “Link to Dropbox”. This should recover the snippets in the majority of cases. If not, wait a few minutes to see if your snippets will download. If you don’t see them in a few minutes, restart the TextExpander app (details below). If that doesn’t help…
  4. Visit your account on www.dropbox.com and revert your snippets file, Settings.textexpander, located in the Dropbox > TextExpander folder, to an earlier version (details below). If your snippet file got overwritten with the default, this will restore the earlier file version which has your snippets.

Once TextExpander 3.2.4 comes out, it will offer to “Revert” your snippets back to what you had in v3.2.2, or let you “Continue” with your current snippets. Since you already have your snippets from Dropbox, click “Continue”.

To restart an app in iOS:

  1. To fully quit an app in iOS 8, press the Home button, and then double-click the Home button. This opens the Task Bar which shows your running apps.
  2. Swipe the app up and off the screen. This truly quits it. Press the Home button to return to your Home screen.
  3. Tap on the TextExpander app to re-launch it.

To revert a Dropbox file to an earlier version:

  1. Open a browser to www.dropbox.com and locate the file to revert: Dropbox > TextExpander > Settings.textexpander.
  2. Control-click on the file, then choose Previous Versions, or select the file then choose More > Previous versions.
  3. Select an older version.

If your snippets have disappeared, and you do not use Dropbox

If you do not have Dropbox to restore your snippets, do not delete the TextExpander app. Your snippets can be retrieved by v3.2.4 when it becomes available.

If you deleted the TextExpander app to reinstall it after your snippets disappeared, then, unfortunately, your snippets are lost.

Recover snippets when TextExpander 3.2.4 is available:

  1. Open the TextExpander app to Groups view.
  2. An alert window will offer the choice to “Revert” to the 3.2.2 snippets, or “Continue” with the current set of snippets. Click Revert.
